Homemade Cheesy Sausage Grits

These cheesy sausage grits are made with andouille sausage, cream, butter and simmered in a flavorful chicken broth.

  • 1 cup grits
  • 4 cups chicken broth
  • 1/2 cup diced andouille sausage
  • 1/4 to 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. black pepper
  • 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese grated
  • 1 jalapeno diced
  • 5 tbsp. unsalted butter
  • 3 tbsp. heavy cream
  • Green onions for garnish optional
  • Fried eggs optional


  • Saute the sausage in saucepan until browned and caramelized.
  • Add the jalapeno and saute for 1 minute.
  • Add the broth and bring to a boil.
  • Add the grits and cook over medium-low heat until tender (20-30 minutes).
  • Stir in cream, butter, salt, pepper and cheese and serve. Garnish with sliced green onions.
  • OPTIONAL: Serve with a fried egg on top.
