For an easy side dish, you’ll love this light and fluffy Instant Pot Jasmine Rice. You only need 4 ingredients and it takes just 4 minutes to pressure cook on high!
We eat a lot of rice in our house! I wouldn’t be exaggerating if I said it was on the menu multiple times a week. Rice just goes perfectly with so many dishes we enjoy, especially curries, stews and stir fries!

This coconut jasmine rice has been a favorite for years, and we love to serve it with pineapple chicken curry, Instant Pot chicken adobo, or air fryer orange chicken for easy weeknight dinners.
Since the Instant Pot is such a great way to cook perfectly tender and fluffy rice, I thought it was about time I shared a recipe for jasmine rice made in the Instant Pot!
Once you make this jasmine rice recipe, be sure to try this Instant Pot basmati rice, Instant Pot sushi rice, Instant Pot wild rice and Instant Pot cilantro lime rice (a personal fave)!

Why this recipe works
- You only need 4 ingredients - rice, coconut oil, water and salt - to make the most amazing fluffy and fragrant rice. Seriously, so delicious!
- The Instant Pot frees up stovetop space and it’s completely hands-off. Just add the ingredients to the Instant Pot and seal the valve. You don’t need to keep an eye on it or worry about the rice boiling over on the stovetop.
- Rice stores well in the fridge or freezer, so this recipe is great for meal prep. It’s easy to have light and fluffy rice on hand for stir fries and curries!
Ingredients
You’ll need 2 cups of jasmine rice for this recipe. Jasmine rice is an aromatic, long-grain white rice that is slightly sweet and floral.
To cook the rice in the Instant Pot, you’ll add 2 cups of water, 1 tablespoon of coconut oil (melted) and 1 teaspoon of salt.
Make sure you stick with 2 cups of water. The rice to water ratio is key to perfectly light and fluffy rice. If you add too much water, the rice will turn out mushy or gummy.
Oil helps prevent the rice from sticking together. I like to use coconut oil for added flavor, but you can use another type of oil or even butter.
Step by step instructions
Rinse the rice in a colander.
Place all the ingredients in the Instant Pot (use a non-stick insert for the best results) and mix to combine.
Cook on high pressure for 4 minutes.
Natural release for 10 minutes, then use the quick release to release the remaining pressure.
Fluff with a fork and serve.
Expert tips
- Be sure to rinse the rice first. This removes excess starch and debris and helps prevent the rice from getting gummy.
- To keep the rice from sticking, I recommend using a non-stick insert for the Instant Pot. This also makes for easy clean up!
- For extra flavor, you can substitute broth for the water. This crockpot chicken broth recipe is one of our go-to broth recipes.
- For even more flavor, try adding some garlic, shallots or ginger to the rice.
- Make sure to naturally release the pressure. The rice will keep cooking as the pressure naturally releases. If you quick release, the rice may not be as tender and fluffy.
- While the rice pressure cooks on high in just 4 minutes, you’ll also need to factor in time for pressure to build and release in the Instant Pot.
Common questions
The total cooking time is about 20 minutes. This includes about 4-5 minutes for pressure to build, 4 minutes to pressure cook on high and then 11-12 minutes for the pressure release (10 minutes natural release and 1-2 minutes quick release).
If you don’t have jasmine rice, you can substitute basmati rice as it’s also a long-grain white rice.
To ensure the rice turns out fluffy, it's always best to rinse the rice first. This will help remove surface starch and debris. Avoid soaking the rice as this can just make it mushy.
Just place it in a colander or mesh sieve and run cold water over it. I usually run my fingers through it to make sure the rice is well rinsed. You may need to rinse it a few times until the water that runs through it is clear and not cloudy.
Storage, freezing and reheating
Cooked jasmine rice should be stored in an airtight container in the fridge, where it will last for 3-4 days.
To freeze cooked jasmine rice, just let it cool completely in the fridge and then transfer it to freezer safe bags or small containers. It should last for 1-2 months in the freezer. Defrost in the fridge overnight before reheating.
To reheat, you can warm the rice in the microwave or in a skillet over medium-low heat.
Serving options
- Serve this rice on the side with coconut lime chicken skewers, twice cooked pork or Shanghai chicken.
- Add it to curries like this spicy Thai pumpkin curry, easy Thai shrimp curry or egg curry.
- It’s delicious with this Brazilian fish stew and Instant Pot gumbo.
- Use leftover jasmine rice to make breakfast fried rice or Chinese fried rice.

I made this jasmine rice last night to go with a beef stir fry. It was the first time I made rice in the Instant Pot and now I may never go back to preparing it on the stove top! Love that it was hands off. It also turned out perfectly tender and fluffy, and the slight hint of coconut from the oil added a nice flavour. Great recipe! Definitely adding it to the dinner rotation!
