Why this recipe works
- It’s quick and easy to make. You just need to peel, slice and skewer the mangoes, brush with oil and grill!
- The recipe is a healthier option for desserts or snacks. Since mangoes are naturally sweet, the recipe is refined sugar-free and calls for very little oil.
- Using an outdoor grill means you don’t need to use an oven and heat up your kitchen during the hot summer!

Ingredients
You’ll need 2-4 fresh mangoes for this recipe. You want to buy mangoes that are fully ripe and blemish free. They should have a little give when gently squeezed. If they’re hard, they’re not ripe yet.
One tablespoon of avocado oil is brushed on the mango slices so they don’t stick on the grill. You can use another type of oil but make sure it has a high smoke point.
To serve the grilled mango slices, I like to add fresh lime juice and tajin seasoning. This is optional, but we love the tangy and spicy flavor it adds to the sweet mango.
Tajin is a mild spice blend made from ground chili peppers, lime and sea salt. The chili lime flavor pairs nicely with the sweet and juicy mango.
Step by step instructions
Peel the mangoes and slice them into large pieces. Pierce with skewers along each side (see photo below).
Brush each side with avocado oil.
Heat a grill over medium heat and brush avocado oil on the grates.
Cook the mango for 2-3 minutes per side, until grill marks start to form.
Remove and serve alone, or with fresh squeezed lime juice and tajin (my favorite).
Expert tips
- If you’re not sure how to peel and slice a mango, here’s a helpful guide on how to cut a mango.
- If your mango is a little soft and juicy, it might be difficult to cut, so just be careful with your knife.
- Make sure you buy fresh and ripe mangoes. If they’re hard, you’ll need to wait for them to ripen.
- Keep your mango slices large enough so they stay on the skewers and don’t fall through the grates on the grill.
- Don’t skip the oil. Brushing oil on the mangoes and the grates helps prevent the mangoes from sticking to the grill.
- Make sure your grill is set to medium heat. If you grill over high heat, the mango slices may burn.
- You only need to grill for 2-3 minutes per side. If you grill for longer, the mango slices may start to get mushy.
Common questions
Since we're using mango slices for this recipe, I prefer to peel the mangoes. The skin is edible and contains nutrients, but it can be a little tough and unpleasant to eat. If you are grilling mango halves without skewers, you may wish to keep the skin on so they're easier to handle.
To check for ripeness, give the mangoes a gentle squeeze. They should have a little give to them. If they’re hard, that's a clear sign that they’re not ripe yet. Ripe mangoes may also have a sweet smell. If your mangoes are unripened, leave them at room temperature for a few days. To quicken the process, you can place them in a paper bag.
Absolutely! You can grill almost any type of fruit. My favorites include peaches, apricots and pineapple.
You can prepare the mango a day in advance. Just peel, slice and skewer the mango and store it in an airtight container or wrap it tightly with plastic wrap. If you’re concerned about the mango slices browning, just drizzle some lemon juice over them.
There are so many options! You can enjoy it on its own or with lime and tajin. You can also serve it with ice cream, yogurt or whipped cream. Pair it with some blueberry curd or serve it on top of cheesecake or pancakes!
More seasoning options
Instead of lime and tajin, try a few of these options:
- Complement the sweetness of the mango slices with some ground cinnamon or nutmeg.
- Use garam masala for a warming blend of spices.
- Bring on the heat with some Cajun seasoning or chili powder.
